In between craft projects, the baking continues at the Howards. It is such a special feeling this time of year. I love it when everyone is home, it’s so cozy and homey. The air smells sweet with baking and everyone is curled up under blankets watching Christmas movies on our huge sectional sofa. I like to keep this treat on hand for when company pops over and to bring to parties as a hostess gift. With only four ingredients it is so easy to make and tastes heavenly! With a hard chocolate top and a toffee middle no one can believe the base is saltine crackers.
Here is the easy recipe;
1 Cup of Butter (Not Margarine)
1 Cup of Brown Sugar
2 Cups of Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
Saltine Crackers (Approximately 40 Crackers)
Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line a 12”x17” cookie sheet with aluminum foil and spray with a non-stick cooking spray. Lay a flat layer of crackers out on the foil. Melt the sugar and butter until it starts to boil. Reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for about 5 minutes or until the mixture is thickened and the sugar has dissolved. Pour the mixture over the layer of crackers and spread it evenly. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the toffee becomes all bubbly. Remove the pan from the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes. Sprinkle on the chocolate chips and once they have melted spread them into an even layer. You can also add nuts, crushed candy cane, dried cranberries or fruit or whatever topping you like. Place it in the fridge to harden then break it into pieces.
These salty and sweet pieces of goodness are really so easy to make and is one of those treats that everyone loves.
